Wahiawa Egg Farm

At this year’s Hawaii State Farm Fair, we picked up a flyer for the local egg farmers association. Apparently, there are four local egg farms still operating on Oahu and supplying all the local fresh eggs here. All fresh local eggs come from one of these farms, but most of them are redistributed and packaged under different company names. How can you tell it’s an egg from a local farmer? All imported mainland eggs are imprinted with a red “US” stamp. The flyer listed the names and address of the four egg farms. I was surprised to see that one was located in Wahiawa which isn’t too far from where I live. I thought it would be fun to visit the egg farm.
Peterson’s Upland Farm is located about 3 miles off of Kamehameha Highway in Wahiawa. Nestled in the middle of residential homes and obscured by a lot of trees was Peterson’s Farm. Don’t drive to fast, or too far up Dole street, on which the farm is located, or you’ll miss the entrance. The entrance is a dirt road and the store is the last building on the right before the bend.
I guess I never cared or paid much attention before, but eggs come in different sizes. They had every size, in white AND brown. Small, medium, large, extra large, jumbo and super jumbo. Super jumbo?? Of course I got a dozen of those. They couldn’t even fit in the jumbo carton. It need a rubber band to keep it closed.
Prices are great. You can’t get anything fresher. The “Grade B” sign scared me, but after reading about the grading system on eggs and trying the eggs over the past month, I can’t tell any difference. Most of the difference would be seen in boiling or poaching the egg where the egg stays in tact.
The drive to the farm just to get eggs is a bit out of the way, but as long as I’m buying eggs for others in addition to myself, it’s worth it.
Peterson’s Upland Farm is open Monday through Saturday from 7am to 4pm. Closed on Sundays. Busiest in the mornings.
