One of the rights of passage for any mom is “the homemade Halloween costume”. I’ve managed to avoid this for the past four years, but this time I couldn’t dodge the bullet. Actually, I stood in the line of fire. My friend’s mom asked Ellis what she was going to be for Halloween, and Ellis said, “a penguin.” Then I said, “yeah, I think I’ll make her costume this year.” My friend’s mom broke into a foreboding laugh and said, “did you start yet?”
