Akamai Foods Oat Cakes

Buy Local, Food Reviews Sep 03, 2009

A couple of months ago we all went to the Hawaii State Farm Fair.  Normally, I’m the “healthy” geek looking for the newest snack that tastes like cardboard, but Paul surprised me and stopped at the Akamai Foods stall and took a sample of their Oat Cakes.  I actually thought they were cookies at first, and perhaps Paul did too, but the nice people explained that they were Oat Cakes — oatmeal cakes if you will.  Upon first taste, I wasn’t too impressed which was due to the fact that I was expecting to eat chocolate chip cookies, and was even going to pass on buying it, but Paul encouraged me to get a couple bags.  When Paul suggests buying something healthy, I gotta jump on it.

The Oat Cakes are much like bread and baked fresh, so they need to be stored in the freezer (up to 3 months) or in the refrigerator (up to 2 weeks).  I ended up putting them in the freezer.  Freezing doesn’t dry out bread products as much as storing them in the refrigerator does.

I finally had the chance to eat both flavors (Mango-Pecan with Pumpkin and Banana-Chocolate Chip).  Here’s my take:

Product:  Hawaiian Oatcakes Banana-Chocolate Chip

Company:  Akamai Foods

Location:  Farmer’s Market, on the net

What’s in it:  Rolled oats, bananas, honey, chocolate chips, flaxseed, raisin, brown sugar

Total out-of-pocket:  $6 for 3 oatcakes

Verdict:  4 out of 5 (yummy, and i’d eat it again)

The 20-sec review:  As long as you don’t go into it thinking you’re going to be eating banana bread or something from Great Harvest, you’ll find these very tasty.  It’s a great breakfast substitute if you don’t have time to sit down and eat.  I like it warmed in the microwave and then toasted.  Not extremely moist (it’s not a muffin), but very palatable otherwise.  Chocolate chips makes me think I’m being “bad”.  Best of all, its low fat and high fiber.  Happily satisfied, and no guilt.  I like that.

Long story short, and 5 oat cakes later, I can positively say that I like them.  I like them so much that there won’t be any left when Paul gets home.  Oh well, I guess I should buy more.
